The Brad White Scholarship Fund

Sail Salem Inc. has established a scholarship fund in memory of a former board member and friend, Brad White. Brad was an accomplished and champion sailor and was a local sailmaker for twenty-seven years. He was known for his informative and entertaining talks at local yacht clubs. In 2000, when his children became of age, he helped establish the Essex Bay Sailing Club. In recent years, his penchant for winning races was replaced with a thorough enjoyment of teaching others to sail. Brad was committed to ensuring access to sailing for all and at Sail Salem he became a major advocate for providing opportunities for the youth of Salem. We miss Brad and have fittingly honored him by the establishment of The Brad White Scholarship Fund.

Since 2007, Sail Salem, Inc. has been introducing the sport of sailing to thousands of children from Salem and its surrounding North Shore communities. In 2024, we completed another successful season where kids attended summer sailing camps and learned to sail Optimist, 420, and Sonar sailboats; and we introduced a 420 racing clinic.

Learning sailing, seamanship and environmental sustainability engenders responsibility and confidence. Fortunately, because of the generosity of our donors, we never had to turn away any camper because of financial need and we were able to provide full and partial scholarships. In 2024, we provided almost $15,000 in scholarships and next year we hope to recruit even more students from the Salem schools—students who typically cannot afford to consider a sailing camp.

We are now hoping to raise at least $20,000 to replenish and add to our scholarship funds. We have good news! James DaSilva, a past Sail Salem board member, the EBSCO Information Services company, and an anonymous donor have pledged to match the first $10,000 of funds raised in this campaign for the Brad White Scholarship Fund. This is a wonderful opportunity to Double Your Gift!

Please help us to reach our goal to ensure that no child will be left on the dock.
